The Quarantine Salon and the artists selected
According to Antonio Freitas Rentes, one of its organisers, the Quarantine Salon drew inspiration from, among others, the art exhibition held in Times Square in 1980. That show, one of the most important of the twentieth century, was staged simply and democratically, and featured artists who were unknown at the time and went on to become names recognised internationally in the visual arts.
Entries for the Quarantine Museum exhibition worked the same way: 891 works were received from across Brazil, unfiltered, through a free online platform.
The 40 selected artists have now been announced, and four were given awards. Among those selected is visual artist Marcele Campanini, who works at Espaço EscutArte and whose work has appeared in other salons in Brazil and in Europe.
Jury prize: Anna Moraes — Micropaisagens — Florianópolis, SC (object). Gold medal: Carlos Borsa — Marat Velado — São Paulo, SP (painting). Silver medal: Fernando Ekman Simões — Bike in Chelsea. Bronze medal: Filipe Cardoso Matos — 34 pontos — Belo Horizonte, MG (mixed media).
It then fell to the public to vote and pick which work would take the fifth prize.
